Penang Entrepreneur Homestay Programme started in mid 2008, after the participants’ houses were upgraded. This programme which encompasses of 9 or villages, involving 200 licensed entrepreneurs or homestay operators who use “Mai Homestay” (which means - Come and Join the Homestay Programme) as the motto to attract local and foreign tourists.
This homestay programme, provides additional income to homestay entrepreneurs and the village community.
Indirectly, this programme helps to eradicate poverty. The income of the community increases when tourists stay and spend at the village concerned. This programme helps to instill entrepreneurship values and help to upgrade human capital of the rural communitiy.
The homestay programme in Penang, exposes local and foreign tourists to daily activities,local tradition and cultures of the villagers.

In promoting homestay in Penang, PERDA has taken the inisiative to promote these programmes locally and abroad. In addition PERDA promotes homestay in Penang by giving information through brochures and newspapers.
